La Liga top scorer 2016 - See La Liga highest goal scorer

"This title tastes great after so much hard work throughout the year and suffering right until the end," said Barca captain Andres Iniesta. "The league is the tournament that tests your consistency throughout the year and it's the one we want to win every year."

Luis Suarez finished the season as La Liga's top scorer with 40 goals, breaking Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's grip on the honour since 2009.

A ravenous Luis Suarez bagged a third hat-trick in five games as defending champions Barcelona won 3-0 at Granada to clinch their 24th La Liga title on Saturday.

The Uruguayan converted Jordi Alba's low pass in the 22nd minute to give Luis Enrique's side the lead. He then headed in Dani Alves' cross in the 38th before tapping Neymar's pass into an empty net in the 86th.

Suarez finished the season as La Liga's top scorer with 40 goals, breaking Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's grip on the honour since 2009. Barca ended with 91 points, one ahead of Real Madrid who won 2-0 at Deportivo La Coruna. Ronaldo scored twice for Real before being substituted at halftime, finishing the campaign with 35 goals.

Gerard Pique came close to giving Barca an early lead when his header was tipped away by goalkeeper Andres Fernandez who also saved well from Messi.

Fernandez was powerless to stop Suarez's opener, however, the Uruguayan tapping the ball home at the far post. The second goal was delightful. Javier Mascherano launched a long diagonal pass towards the byline and Alves raced to meet it before hooking a cross for Suarez to nod in from close range.

Suarez nearly laid on a third for Neymar but the Brazilian was denied by Fernandez. Neymar then generously played in Suarez to complete his hat-trick before the end.

"This title tastes great after so much hard work throughout the year and suffering right until the end," said Barca captain Andres Iniesta. "The league is the tournament that tests your consistency throughout the year and it's the one we want to win every year."

Real got off to an ideal start at Deportivo when Gareth Bale manoeuvred his way past a defender on the left and cut the ball back to Karim Benzema who squared it for Ronaldo to score in the seventh minute.

The Portugal striker's second in the 25th minute had an element of good fortune, his header from a corner bouncing off Deportivo's Pedro Mosquera on its way into the net.

Ronaldo also hit the post and the crossbar before being replaced by James Rodriguez although there was no suggestion he had an injury two weeks before the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

Fatma Samoura appointed as FIFA's Secretary General - (photo)

Fatma Samoura appointed as FIFA's Secretary General - Senegalese UN diplomat Fatma Samoura was named FIFA's new secretary General by FIFA president Gianni Infantino today in Mexico, during FIFA's 66th International congress.

Fatma Samoura currently lives in Nigeria and was appointed personally by Infantino today at the 66th FIFA Congress according to FIFA statues.  Fatma Samoura appointment will make her the first female number two ever at world football's governing body, FIFA.

Fifa president says Fatma Samoura was appointed as he aims to promote values such as Gender equality, zero-tolerance for racism and corruption with new leadership as he begins his tenure as FIFA President.

The former secretary general, Jerome Valcke of France, was sacked in January and banned from football for 12 years over misconduct in television deals and World Cup ticket sales, one of the many scandals that hit FIFA.
Markus Kattner has been acting as the Secretary General since Infantino was elected as president back in February.

Adamu warns Eagles not to underrate opponents on World Cup

A former Director-General, National Sports Commission (NSC), Amos Adamu, said that the Super Eagles must be wary of their 2014 World Cup opponents.

“How I wish they win the World Cup. One fundamental thing we mustn’t underestimate is that all the teams that qualified for the World Cup are potential winners.

“So we don’t have to start looking down on a country and feel that they are not threats to us. Every team emerges from a competition.

“So no team in Brazil is a cheap party. But I think we are at our best now and with a little bit of good luck, we’ll thrive,” Adamu said.

He also said that there was need for the team’s technical crew to give other players a chance, adding that it would help strengthen the team.

"I think it would be important to recall some players who appear to be doing well in their clubs at the moment,” he said.

C Ronaldo: Portugal forward praised after fifth hat-trick

C Ronaldo has won his personal duel with Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovic to help Portugal reach the 2014 World Cup.
C Ronaldo, scored his fifth hat-trick of the season in the play-off second leg as Portugal won 3-2 in Solna - despite Ibrahimovic's double - to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory.

C Ronaldo also struck the only goal in the first leg, with those four efforts in the tie prompting a host of former and current players to suggest the ex-Manchester United forward should win this year's Ballon d'Or, which is awarded to the best player in the world.

His latest performance could help his chances of winning the award because Fifa, world football's governing body, extended the voting period from 15 November to 29 November after receiving a response of less that 50% from eligible voters.

Manchester City missed the chance to go top of the Premier League following a shock defeat at Aston Villa

Yaya Toure volleyed in the opener to give City hope of recording a first away win of the season.

Karim El Ahmadi's close-range finish levelled matters only for Edin Dzeko to head City back into the lead.

But Villa equalised through Leandro Bacuna's free-kick before snatching the three points when Andreas Weimann raced through and poked home late on.

The win was Villa's first at home this season and the second half performance will have given home fans plenty to be happy about - particularly the display of Dutch midfielder Bacuna.

The summer signing from FC Groningen provided the assist for Villa's first, while his equalising free-kick - his first Premier League goal - would have been difficult for any goalkeeper to keep out.

City had arrived at Villa Park looking to maintain the momentum built up from their impressive 4-1 defeat of Manchester United last weekend, a third successive home win in the Premier League.

But for all their dominance at the Etihad Stadium this season, they have been disappointing on the road.
