FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST EDUCATION STANDARD IN NIGERIA RELATING TO ISI-UZO LOCAL
GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
In every
society, education helps to develop the child from cradle to grave, one
undergoes different forms of educations. The basic form of education is the
traditional education otherwise known as informal education. This
is the type of education in which a child consciously or unconsciously learns
from his parents, elders or any members of his family or the society.
Nwuzor and
Ochor (1982) pointed that consciously or unconsciously, the young is being
educated by the members of the family, the society and the things around him.
It is through it that the child starts his education. When this form of
education takes place, it enables the child to learn the skills, norms, customs
and values of the society, inculcation of these norms helps the child to be
well adjusted and ready for other type of education.
Similarly,
civilization has influenced the human needs and brought about improved living
condition in human society, example includes shelter, clothing and medical
care. The traditional education otherwise known as informal education could not
do change much in response to this new complex society, there arose the need
for organized education which invariable another type of education known as formal
education.
However, this
type of education is an effective means of training for good citizenship,
political, socio-cultural and economic development, provision of skilled
manpower and promotion of unity in the society, in this regard, no development
in the area will be complete without formal education.
This is why
Nigerian Educational Council (1980) describes education as the great instrument
devised by man to influence control and to change his environment.
Nwuzor (1979)
stated that education is the right of everyone and everybody is entitled to
education as a means of ensuring efficiency in all aspect of human endeavor.
Though formal education is the universal right of every human being. The rate
of education progress has not been the same either among the nations, state or
local governments. For example, in Nigeria, there are different rate of
educational growth in all the 36 states of the federation.
In this
contribution, Ogun (1982) shows that states of the federation progress at
different rate from primary education to tertiary.
With respect
to educational development however, different criteria can be used in this
research to compare backwardness in a given area/location. This criterion includes
the number of literate citizens, skilled personal such as doctors, Engineers,
Lawyers, Architects and professors as well as people’s ability to organize
themselves properly in the areas of politics, culture, socially and effective
management of the people economic resources in their society.
Using Isi-Uzo Local
Government in this study or research as one of the Local Government areas in
Enugu State that has witnessed poor educational progress compared to some other
Local governments in the same state.
Despite the awareness campaign by both the State and federal Government,
majority of Isi-Uzo Local Government indigene are illiterates, resulting from not
attending school and the diatance location of the local government to urbanization.
This statement can be supported by the number of people graduating from Primary
and Post Primary institutions in the area compared to other Local governments
of the State.
Below
indicates Data from various communities in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area and
