Reasons for cellular mobile systems
The major reasons for developing cellular mobile
phones are:-
(i). Limited service capability of conventional
fixed lines. Here the number of customers is limited by the number of channels
assigned to a particular frequency zone.
(ii). Poor service performance: The
point- to point micro wave links used in fixed trunk lines means that any break
at any point in the chain will affect the entire route.
(iii). Inefficient spectrum utilization: In
conventional systems, each channel can only serve one customer at a time in
service area thus resulting in an inefficient spectrum utilization when
compared to cellular system where the use of frequency reuse makes it possible
for one channel to serve more than one customer at a time in a service area.
(iv). High operational cost: Most
fixed or landlines are wired. The cables are usually underground or overhead.
This leads to a high maintenance cost. Also, the operational cost is high in
large sparsely populated areas.
(v) Information security is poor in fixed lines
as telephone operators can tap the lines
(vi) Emergency management is poor
with these systems as information for help can only be sent if a telephone is
available around the scene of the event.
